§ 02 / Mechanism · What Botox Actually Does

What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is onabotulinumtoxinA — an FDA-approved neuromodulator from Allergan. Tiny doses placed in specific facial muscles temporarily soften the muscle's contraction, smoothing the dynamic wrinkles that form when you frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows.

How Botox actually works

Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction — the signal your nerves send muscles to contract. Without that signal, the targeted muscle relaxes for 3-4 months. The skin overlying the muscle stops creasing in the same pattern, and the dynamic wrinkles soften. The toxin doesn't migrate; it stays where Kristen places it.

"Refreshed, not frozen"

Reviv's Botox philosophy: preserve facial expression while softening the dynamic lines you want softened. Over-dosing gives you the frozen look that became the "bad Botox" stereotype. Kristen dosing is conservative-first — we'd rather have you come back for a small touch-up at week 2 than over-treat at session one. You should still be able to raise your eyebrows.

Reviv stocks Botox + Daxxify. Botox is the gold-standard with 20+ years of clinical data and the most FDA-approved indications. Daxxify is the longer-lasting peptide-stabilized neurotoxin (4-6 months in our patients vs Botox's 3-4 months). Same $9.99/unit pricing for both.

Why dosing varies: muscle mass, gender, history of prior Botox, treatment goal (preventative vs corrective), and skin/muscle relationship all factor in. Men typically need 1.5x-2x the dose of women for the same area due to greater muscle mass. Kristen quotes you a unit count at consult before any injection happens.

Botox vs Daxxify.

Two FDA-approved neurotoxins — Botox and Daxxify (Revance) — both at $9.99/unit at Reviv. Different stabilizers, different durations. Reviv's framing: Botox for the gold standard with 20+ years of safety data, Daxxify for patients who want fewer treatments per year.

Why Reviv keeps Botox + Daxxify at parity pricing: patient choice should be about which toxin fits the patient's schedule and goals — not which one's cheaper. Some patients prefer Botox's longer track record. Some prefer Daxxify's longer duration. Both are excellent.Jeuveau is stocked but not actively recommended.

§ 08 / Hyperhidrosis · Medical Botox

Botox for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Underarm hyperhidrosis is one of Botox's FDA-approved medical indications — not cosmetic. ~50 units per underarm blocks the cholinergic signal to your sweat glands for 6-9 months. Many insurance plans cover this with prior authorization for severe cases.

How it works for sweating

Eccrine sweat glands receive their "sweat" signal via the same neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) that drives muscle contraction. Botox blocks that signal locally, so the targeted gland stops over-producing sweat. Lasts 6-9 months per session — longer than cosmetic Botox because sweat glands recover the signal pathway more slowly than muscles.

What to expect at consult

Kristen will ask about severity (HDSS scale 3-4 typically warrants treatment), prior antiperspirant trials, and whether the sweating is impacting your daily life. Most insurance plans require documented failure of prescription antiperspirants (Drysol, Hypercare) before approving coverage. We can provide records to your insurer for prior authorization.

Cost · cash vs insurance

Cash pay: ~$500 per underarm ($1,000 both sides) at $9.99/unit, ~50 units per underarm. With insurance: typically copay only after prior auth is approved. We can also treat hands, feet, and forehead hyperhidrosis though those are usually cash-pay only.

§ 09 / Preventative Botox · When to Start

Preventative Botox — when to start.

"Preventative Botox" (also called baby Botox, micro-Botox, or microtox) means starting low-dose treatment before dynamic wrinkles become permanent etched lines. The right candidates are typically late-20s to mid-30s patients who are already seeing forehead or 11 lines at rest.

The science

Dynamic wrinkles (the lines that form when you contract a muscle) become static wrinkles (lines visible at rest) after enough years of repeated muscle contraction. Once a wrinkle is etched into the dermis, Botox softens it but doesn't fully resolve it — you'd need filler or microneedling for that. Preventative Botox stops the etching process before it starts.

When to start — honest read

Most aesthetic clinicians, including Kristen, recommend starting preventative Botox when you can see early dynamic lines starting to "echo" at rest after a contraction — typically late 20s to early 30s. Starting too early (early 20s with no visible lines) doesn't accelerate prevention, just spends money. Starting too late (mid-40s with deep static lines) means combination treatment with filler or microneedling.

Dose for preventative

Preventative Botox is conservative-dose Botox. Typical preventative regimen: 8-15 units forehead, 12-18 units glabellar, 6-12 units crow's feet — spaced 4 months apart. Lower than corrective dosing for established lines.

§ 12 / Safety · Who Should Skip This

Who should not get Botox.

Botox has an excellent safety profile (20+ years of FDA data). A few groups should still skip or pause.

§ Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — insufficient safety data for cosmetic neurotoxin. Pause and resume after weaning.
  • Neuromuscular disorders — myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, ALS. Botox is contraindicated.
  • Active skin infection in the treatment area.
  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin, tobramycin, etc.) — can potentiate neurotoxin effect. Wait 2 weeks post-course.
  • Known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or human serum albumin (Daxxify is peptide-stabilized for albumin-allergic patients).
  • Recent surgery in treatment area — wait 4-6 weeks for full healing.
  • Bleeding disorders or active anticoagulant therapy — assess at consult; may proceed with adjustments.

§ 14 / FAQ · Botox Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Botox is $9.99 per unit at Reviv Beauty — below the Central Florida average of $12-$20 per unit. Total cost depends on unit count: forehead 10-30 units ($100-$300), glabellar 11s 15-25 units ($150-$250), crow’s feet 8-24 units ($80-$240), lip flip $65 flat, masseter 60-100 units ($600-$1,000).

Botox uses human serum albumin as stabilizer; Daxxify uses a proprietary peptide (RTP-004), making it vegan-friendly. Botox lasts 3-4 months; Daxxify lasts 4-6 months in our patients. Botox has 20+ years of clinical data and more FDA-approved indications. Both are $9.99 per unit at Reviv.

Cosmetic Botox lasts 3-4 months in most patients. Daxxify lasts 4-6 months in our patients. Hyperhidrosis (medical) Botox lasts 6-9 months because sweat glands recover the signal pathway more slowly than muscles.

Typical unit ranges: forehead 10-30, glabellar 15-25, crow’s feet 8-24, lip flip 4-6 (flat $65), masseter 60-100, brow lift 4-8, hyperhidrosis ~50 per underarm. Men typically need 1.5x-2x the dose for the same area. Kristen quotes you a unit count at consult before any injection happens.

Cosmetic Botox is cash-pay only. Medical Botox indications (hyperhidrosis, chronic migraine, cervical dystonia) may be covered by insurance with prior authorization. Most plans require documented failure of prescription antiperspirants before approving hyperhidrosis treatment.

Yes — Allē is currently offering $65 off your first Botox treatment: join free at alle.com, activate it in the app before your visit, and it stacks with our $9.99/unit pricing. Allē is also Allergan’s free loyalty program: earn points on every Botox, Juvéderm, and SkinMedica treatment and redeem them for savings on future visits. Sign up at alle.com before your appointment and check in at your visit — Allē also runs seasonal offers throughout the year.

Yes. Underarm hyperhidrosis is an FDA-approved indication. ~50 units per underarm blocks the acetylcholine signal to sweat glands for 6-9 months. Cash pay is simply our $9.99/unit rate — about $500 per underarm (~50 units); insurance often covers with prior authorization for severe cases (HDSS scale 3-4).

Preventative Botox means starting low-dose treatment before dynamic wrinkles become permanently etched. Typical candidates are late-20s to early-30s patients seeing early dynamic lines that "echo" at rest. Conservative dosing every 4 months. Read more about preventative Botox at Reviv.

Not at Reviv. Kristen’s philosophy is “refreshed, not frozen” — preserve facial expression while softening dynamic lines. Conservative-first dosing with optional touch-up at week 2 if needed. You should still be able to raise your eyebrows.

No downtime. Most patients return to work immediately. Avoid lying flat or rubbing the treatment area for 4 hours. No exercise, alcohol, or heat (sauna, hot yoga) for 24 hours. Tiny pinprick bleeding at injection sites is normal and resolves within minutes.

Skip if pregnant or breastfeeding, have neuromuscular disorders (myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton, ALS), active skin infection in treatment area, take aminoglycoside antibiotics, have known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or human serum albumin (Daxxify is peptide-stabilized alternative), or recently had surgery in treatment area.

Botox onset is 3-7 days, full effect at 14 days. Daxxify onset is 2-3 days. Two-week follow-up is encouraged for any touch-up adjustment. The treated muscle gradually relaxes as the toxin takes effect — you don’t look “different” overnight, just progressively smoother over the first two weeks.

OnabotulinumtoxinA is the generic / non-proprietary name for the active ingredient in Botox Cosmetic — they refer to the same molecule manufactured by Allergan/AbbVie. \”Botox\” is the brand name; \”OnabotulinumtoxinA\” is the FDA-approved drug name. The product injected is identical. Other neuromodulators have different non-proprietary names: Daxxify is daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm, Xeomin is incobotulinumtoxinA, Jeuveau is prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs. All four work via the same mechanism (blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction); the differences are in formulation, accessory proteins, and duration.

Eyelid ptosis (drooping) is a known but uncommon Botox side effect — it occurs when product migrates beyond the intended muscle, usually from injection too close to the levator palpebrae or insufficient pressure-mapping at the brow. At Reviv, every injection follows Dr. Mauricio de Maio’s MD Codes™ placement protocol, which includes safe-zone landmarks specifically designed to prevent ptosis. If you ever experience drooping after our treatment, we can typically reverse it within days using prescription apraclonidine eye drops, and Kristen will follow up at no charge to assess. The published rate of ptosis with proper technique is under 1%.

No — Reviv Beauty is a cosmetic-only practice, and therapeutic Botox for chronic migraines is a separate FDA-approved indication that requires neurology referral and typically goes through medical insurance (CPT code 64615). If you want migraine Botox, ask your primary care physician for a neurology referral; we’re happy to refer locally. We do treat masseter Botox for TMJ / bruxism (a cosmetic + functional crossover) which can incidentally help tension-type headaches in some patients — but that is not migraine treatment.

No — Reviv Beauty is by appointment only, so we can’t take true walk-ins. But same-day booking is often available Tuesday–Saturday, and Botox is routinely done in the same visit as your free consultation — consult, mapping, and injection in about 30 minutes when the schedule allows. Book online or call (407) 534-9178 to check today’s availability.
