Voluma XC has a high G-prime (firmness) designed for deep supraperiosteal placement at the cheekbone or chin — not the thin, dynamic skin under the eye. Using Voluma in the tear trough increases Tyndall effect risk (blue-grey discoloration), creates a firm bulge through thin skin, and resists smooth integration.

Volbella XC is engineered specifically for delicate areas with thin skin (lips, perioral, tear trough). Lower G-prime, less hydrophilic, more cohesive — it sits flush and doesn’t hold water. That’s why Volbella is FDA-approved for infraorbital hollowing and Voluma is not.

Most under-eye treatments use 0.5–1 syringe of Volbella XC total (split between both eyes). A half-syringe is often plenty for a true tear trough — the under-eye is a small zone and overfilling is the #1 cause of complications.

Most under-eye corrections need only 0.5–1 vial of Hylenex per side. For complex cases or revision work, we use Clarius L20 HD3 ultrasound to map exactly where prior filler is sitting before dissolving. Re-treatment with fresh Volbella can happen 2–4 weeks after dissolving.
